How to spot a crypto pump-and-dump call on Telegram

A pump and dump is when a group pushes up the price of a small coin with hype, and the organisers get out at the top. The people who joined late are left with losses. Here is how to recognise one before it costs you money.

How a pump and dump works

  1. Quiet start. The organisers pick a small coin with little trading and collect it cheaply.
  2. The hype. A Telegram, WhatsApp or YouTube channel announces a "signal" or a "coin reveal" at a fixed time, often with a countdown.
  3. The spike. Thousands of followers rush in at the same moment, so the price jumps within minutes.
  4. The dump. The organisers cash out into that rush. The price falls back, often below where it started, and late joiners are told to "keep holding".

7 warning signs in the message

  1. Huge return claims: "10x", "50x", "100x", "crorepati", "to the moon".
  2. "Guaranteed" profit: "pakka", "sure shot", "100%", "no loss", "risk-free". Nobody can guarantee crypto prices.
  3. Countdown and urgency: "only 2 hours left", "sirf 2 ghante", "before listing", "last chance", "jaldi".
  4. VIP or insider groups: "VIP", "insider", "admin already in", "premium group", "paid group".
  5. Referral links and unknown exchanges: "use my link", "only on this DEX", "new token". The promoter often earns from your sign-up or trades.
  6. Profit screenshots of past "wins". They are easy to fake and never show the losses.
  7. The channel messaged you first or added you to a group you never joined.

What the market data shows

The chart often gives it away before you ever reply. The Tip Checker looks up the coin and flags these:

SignWhat to look for
Price already pumpedUp 50% or more in 24 hours, or 100% or more in 7 days. You are probably late.
Sudden volume spikeTrading volume 5 times its normal level or more.
Low liquidityLess than US$1 million traded in 24 hours. A few large orders can move the price.
Very new tokenListed for less than 90 days, so there is little history to judge it.
DEX contract trapsHoneypot code (you may not be able to get out), trading tax above 10%, or an owner who can still mint or freeze tokens.

Example: how the Tip Checker scores a typical message

This message is made up, but it is typical of what we see:

🚀 VIP SIGNAL: $XYZ will 50x before listing! Pakka profit, only 2 hours left. Join our premium group with my link.
Red flag foundWords that triggered itPoints
Unrealistic return claim"50x"20
"Guaranteed" language"Pakka"20
Urgency pressure"before listing", "only 2 hours"10
Exclusivity / insider pressure"VIP", "premium group"10
Referral link or unknown venue"my link"10
Profit promise"profit"10
TotalVery high risk80 / 100

That is from the wording alone. If the coin also shows a pump or thin liquidity, the score rises further (capped at 100). See how every rule works.

What to do if you get a message like this

  1. Pause. Real opportunities do not disappear in two hours.
  2. Check it: paste the message into the Tip Checker, or check the channel or exchange on Is it real?
  3. Do not forward it. Forwarding spreads the scam to your friends and family.
  4. Report it: in Telegram, open the channel → ⋮ → Report. If you lost money in India, report at cybercrime.gov.in or call the cyber-crime helpline 1930 as soon as possible.
